Player Summary:
Senior. Transferred from Florida. RT starter, though he rotates out occasionally at USC and did the same at FL. Also has a playing history of playing at guard and left tackle. Great height, strength and bulk, and has surprisingly quick feet for his mass. Above average run blocker and average in pass protection. As a run blocker, he is above average. Can overpower defenders with his sheer size. Can fire forward and block at the 2nd level. Can sustain blocks, encircle/seal off the corner, and plays with above average good balance. Has streaky hand placement in both phases of the game which prevents him from latching onto defenders and driving them off the ball. Needs to work on strike timing and inside hand placement; too often outside the shoulders. In pass protection, he is average. Is more of a waist bender and struggles with knee bend, which makes me question his core strength, but does a good job of blocking bull rushers and playing with a wide base. Good at spinning the barrel and reworking/replacing his hands v. spin moves. Flashed a strong initial punch which he should use more often. Plays with good effort – doesn’t loaf and works to the whistle. Will see him in-person in a few weeks to get a closer look at his body and ankles. Could be a sleeper.
Scheme Fit:
OT.
Power Statement:
Michael is an above average run blocker and average pass protector. I would like to see him more in-person in the upcoming game v. Notre Dame to confirm what the film shows, and especially get a better look at his ankle size. He could be a sleeper and develop into a quality prospect.
