Player Summary:
Redshirt Senior from Scottsdale, Arizona who played at USC and Pittsburgh University before transferring to BYU prior to the 2023 season. Played at Desert Mountain High School (AZ) where he was named to the 2018 Prep Star All-Western Region team, doing so under QB coach and NFL hall of famer Kurt Warner. Mediocre height, marginal weight, with solid arm length, and good hand size. Adequate overall athleticism, he plays with solid foot speed, adequate acceleration, and good balance. Solid decision maker when reading the edge on RPO’s, processes off coverage well getting the ball out to the flat quickly with subpar accuracy, usually behind the WR. Good timing and anticipation on hooks, comebacks, and outs, he uses efficient arm strength to get the ball to the chest of the receiver out of his break. Solid dissecting zone coverage over the middle of the field, he throws WR/TE’s into open space with average accuracy, picking apart soft spots between ILB’s. Adequate working through 1st and 2nd reads before hitting the checkdown man, bird dogs the 1st read when he likes the matchup. Average feel in the pocket, solid recognizing when he needs to step up and slide right, he has marginal awareness for his blindside not knowing when to spin out and extend the play to the left. Marginal accuracy on deep throws past 16+ air yards due to his mechanics, he steps outside of the target line when throwing and on deep balls does not finish with a strong follow through leading to underthrows and missing inside. Poor decision maker vs pressure, you can see the panic on tape often throwing a 50-50 ball up down the sideline while getting clobbered, instead of hitting a hot route underneath. He doesn’t shy away from contact in the pocket when making throws, the nature of him going down the field vs pressure leads to turnovers.
Scheme Fit:
QB in a pro style system where he can be under center and work play action.
Power Statement:
Slovis excels with concepts crossing the middle of the field, he plays with solid accuracy in short/intermediate areas and has the arm strength to make any throw. Stepping out of line with his target when throwing and finishing deep balls with extension could improve his accuracy down the field.
