Player Summary:
Redshirt Senior from Bluefield, Virginia. A 3-star DB across all recruiting platforms out of Graham High School. He also played QB accounting for 61 total TD’s in his senior season, which is 3rd of any player in Virginia High School history. Good height, marginal weight, with good arm length, hand size, and adequate AA. Plays with solid lateral quickness, COD, average acceleration, and good foot speed. Good in man coverage vs. TEs because he understands the route tree, playing with anticipation and adequate acceleration to match his opponent in space. Solid in zone coverage, uses lateral quickness and awareness to match crossing concepts through his zone. Above average in reading the QB’s eyes and using it to his advantage to vacate an area or drive with solid COD to make a play on the ball. Good ball skills, he is excellent at locating the WR’s hands while tracking the ball coming in, and he consistently breaks up passes and even creates turnovers with quality hands. Solid in run support, he understands his gap responsibility and plays with fair integrity. He can step up into a missed A/B gap by an ILB and make a good form tackle on an RB with a head full of steam. Adequate in the open field as a tackler, he takes efficient angles and does a good job gathering his speed in space to bring down ball carriers. He is adequate at finishing tackles due to being late with his hands when wrapping up. Marginal vs. WR with average AA in man coverage, he has shown that he can be manipulated at the stem of routes with good COD, and ultimately gets beat due to having less acceleration and quickness. He is susceptible to penalties at the top of routes because he tends to play them physically trying to alter their path and has a difficult time staying in phase vs. vertical routes due to having a subpar backpedal.
Scheme Fit:
SS in Cover 3 scheme where he can rotate playing in the box and at depth.
Power Statement:
Cam Allen is a savvy DB who has experience playing both safety positions and nickel cornerback. He excels at reading the QB’s eyes when playing zone coverage. Cannot trust him in man coverage vs. WR’s, if he plays near the LOS he will be beaten with speed, and playing off the ball he is manipulated with COD.
