Player Summary:
4th year senior from Suwanee, Georgia who became a full-time starter in 2021 as a sophomore. Has great height and marginal weight for a cornerback at the next level. Possesses a slim body frame with long arms to help with deflecting passes. Good AA. Good feet to mirror a WR in the short area. Solid acceleration and COD skills. Displays fluid hips and quickness to move with shorter/shiftier WR. Will struggle guarding TE due to average play strength. Good long speed to run with WR downfield. At the LOS, he displays good jam technique to hold the WR at the LOS. When he plays off-man coverage, he is solid at recognizing routes and knowing when to break on them. Demonstrates good eyes to read the quarterback while dropping in his zone and good range to carry his zone when he has to. Ball skills are solid. Able to get his head around and deflect a lot of passes. Solid blitzing CB. Has the awareness to find the ball in the backfield and record tackles for loss or sacks. As a run defender, he is average at best. Marginal at breaking away from blocks and solid as an open-field tackler. Tries to make contact instead of diving or lunging at the ball carrier. Usually needs a clear path to be an effective blitzer.
Scheme Fit:
Outside Man-to-Man CB or Cover 3 Scheme
Power Statement:
Newsome plays solid man coverage using solid AA and average physicality that bigger opponents can take advantage of. He needs to improve on shedding blocks so he is able to make tackles when needed. He has not shown the ability to take the ball away, but his coverage skills keep him in a good position. Can become a starter if groomed correctly.
