Player Summary:

Senior. Starting ILB. Has good height, already has potential pro body type. Good length probably still can add bulk to his frame. Has above-average read and reaction ability. Tends to always be around the ball or at least near it. Wreaked havoc in the ARUN game with 10T, 6 of them solo, 1 sack, dropped an INT, but had a crucial FF in the red zone. Can read wrong and bite on the play-action at-times but you can constantly see him blowing up plays before they start. Solid in drop coverage. Shows good ability at taking away the checkdown and making those middle of the field throws harder for the QB. Above-Average tackler in space. Watch him track mobile QB’s in space vs ARUN & FLUN. Can occasionally run into a wall and get washed down by OL. Plays OLB in some schemes but gets sub out due to lack of coverage ability. Would like him to improve in that area if he wants to be trusted in that outside spot at the next-level. Nice motor. Has a quick first step that catches OL off guard when he comes on the blitz. Gets neutralized at times trying to take on interior lineman but like that he’s not afraid to fill the hole that will help him make the tackle or force the RB to chain direction in favor of the defense. Plays special teams. Has been on the punt return team all four years at TXAM.

Scheme Fit:

ILB

Power Statement:

Chris Russell is a promising ILB with potential pro size, a nice motor, and a knack for being around the football. Adds value as a quality special teams player.
