Player Summary:
Michael Wiley is an all-conference returning starter. He will be a 5th-year senior who has played 37 games. His production has improved every season. Wiley displays good elusiveness that he shows as a ball carrier and route runner. He is a very good athlete. This makes him dangerous in the open field. He has very good play speed in all phases of his game; running, receiving, and pass protection. He has adequate play strength that keeps him from playing more. His production is adequate. He does not get a lot of touches (10 carries per game, 3 catches per game in 2022). But he does not always consistently take advantage of his opportunities. Wiley is a very good runner. His elite quickness, acceleration, and long speed make him an effective outside runner. On the perimeter of the defense, he has good vision and adequate ability to break tackles. For inside/short yardage it is the opposite for Wiley. He is an adequate inside/short-yardage runner. His long frame and pad level make it difficult for him to produce inside runs. He has marginal vision and a poor ability to make defenders miss when executing inside runs. In the passing game, Wiley is elite. With the exception of the 2020 season, Wiley has averaged 9+ yards per catch every season he has played. He has elite hands. Is an elite route runner who has an elite ability to separate from the defender. When the offense goes into empty formations Wiley stays on the field and can line up anywhere in the formation. He is a matchup nightmare on 3rd down and in the red zone (2 red zone touchdowns vs COUN). Wiley is a solid and willing blocker. He shows toughness and leads blocking for the quarterback on sprint-out protection. Wiley is good at blitz pick-up. He understands his role in the protection and anchors well versus the defender.
Scheme Fit:
Wiley is fit for an outside zone run-game offense that is intentional about using the running back in the passing game. (Broncos, 49ers, Dolphins)
Power Statement:
Wiley’s elite ability to run routes from anywhere will make him a threat in the NFL. His rare athleticism will give him an opportunity to develop and be productive on special teams.
