Player Summary:

Doneiko Slaughter is a senior CB who became a full-time starter midway through the 2022 season. He typically aligns as the field CB in Tennessee’s defense where he is asked to play a variety of coverages, especially Cover 3 and Quarters. Has also aligned at safety and nickel in his career. Possesses solid height and weight with a well-built frame. Excellent LOS skills; uses a solid jam with proper hand placement in press-man, and is able to match receivers step-for-step off the line. Shows patience with a good understanding of when to open his hips in man coverage. Uses a good collision in catch-man with solid physicality to disrupt the timing of the route. Excellent hip fluidity to open up on a dime and stay in phase when transitioning. Displays considerable foot speed and acceleration to carry receivers with good speed downfield. In zone coverage, utilizes quality lateral agility to drop fluidly to his zone while reading quarterback intentions. Great ball skills on all levels; able to track the ball in the air, time his jumps well, and get his hands on the ball to break up the pass or haul it in for an interception. Able to drop his weight and change direction with ease, and uses great foot speed and burst in transition to break downhill quickly. Vs. blocking receivers, able to slip underneath or engage with violence to defeat blocks. Eager to help in run support, and works through traffic to get to the ball carrier. Needs to improve his eye discipline as he looks at the quarterback in man coverage and falls out of phase with his receiver. In zone coverage, needs to get comfortable taking his eyes off the quarterback as he loses sight of targets in his area. Struggles to bring down good-sized receivers in space due to adequate functional strength. Has a tendency to lunge when making tackles which cause him to miss. An excellent athlete who will excel with more experience.

Scheme Fit:

Translates best as a CB who can play in either man or zone schemes.

Power Statement:

An inexperienced CB with loads of potential due to his excellent athleticism, skills in both man and zone coverages, and his ability to play the ball in the air. With additional experience, the game will slow down and he will become a coveted prospect in the draft.
