Player Summary:

6th-year senior with average height/weight measurables, a sturdy build, and a well-developed frame. Former boundary corner who transitioned to safety before his sophomore season. Started his first full season at nickel in SDSU’s 3-3-5 defense in 2022. Scrappy, physical defensive back with sharp instincts and high FBI. Keen awareness of alignment, positioning, and leverage as an outside-run defender. Adequate play strength at the POA, but can shed blockers with quick, strong hands. Solid one-on-one tackler in open space. High contact courage with some sneaky pop behind his pads. Not hesitant when blitzing from the nickel spot or running the alley from the safety. Flashes a quick trigger when running downhill to cover the flats. Appears most comfortable playing close to the LOS, but still uses quality range to cover the back end efficiently as a deep safety. Gets the most out of his coverage skills in press man. Physical at the LOS and boasts fluid hips to stay in front of his assignment while in phase. Has the makeup speed to maintain tight coverage at the top of the route. Often puts himself in an advantageous position to compete at the catch point, but ball skills and production are questionable due to low interception numbers. Lacks value in short-yardage situations due to insufficient play strength and positional fit. Possesses position versatility at multiple spots across the defensive backfield but projects best as a nickel corner at the next level. Will likely contribute on special teams as well. The combination of toughness, athleticism, and instincts should translate to success on kickoff and punt coverage. Has steadily improved every year since arriving at SDSU in 2019 and will be a key veteran presence in the Aztecs’ secondary in 2023.

Scheme Fit:

4-2-5/3-3-5 Nickel

Power Statement:

Instinctual, tough, and physical athlete with valuable experience at multiple positions in SDSU’s 3-3-5 defense. Scheme versatile defensive back who thrives in run support and press-man coverage in the slot. Can also serve as a rotational deep safety and a core special teams player at the next level.
