USFL WEEK 7 RECAP

Written by Karver Jordan

USFL Fans! Week seven was a success for the league. So many good games, week eight should be action filled as we get closer to the playoffs. What team surprised you in week seven? Let us know!

With all that being said, Let’s take a look at week seven.

Birmingham Stallions (5-2):

The Birmingham Stallions have been incredible all season, becoming five and two (5-2) after the week seven 24-20 victory over the New Orleans Breakers. Alex McGough was on fire! 16 completions out of 23 passing attempts (16-23) For 176 yards with one touchdown! A completion percentage of 69.6%. McGough would do great on the ground, with seven rushing attempts for 22 yards with a touchdown. CJ Marable would become more involved, and the running back would record 17 rushing attempts for 86 yards. Linebacker Quentin Poling would make a mark in week seven, with 11 tackles, two sacks, and three tackles for loss! A good game overall for the Stallions. Moving up to the best team in the league, Giddy Up!

New Orleans Breakers (4-3):

The New Orleans Breakers have fallen off while becoming 4-3, It wouldn’t be a good day for anyone on the team. McLeod Bethel-Thompson the Breakers signal-caller wouldn’t perform very well, Bethel-Thompson would complete 24 of his 42 passes (24-42) for 279 yards with one touchdown and one interception while racking up a completion percentage of 57.1%. Star running back Wes Hills would perform okay, with 20 rushing attempts for 77 yards with 3.8 yards on average.

Philadelphia Stars (4-3):

The Philadelphia Stars are BACK! What a day from Case “Chef” Cookus! He was cooking up some great plays for the Stars in their 37-31 win over the Pittsburgh Maulers! Cookus would go 18-30 in the air for 235 yards with two touchdowns and one interception! An overall completion percentage of 60.0% and a QBR of 93.1! Matt Colburn II would show he still has it, 20 rushing attempts for 82 yards with two touchdowns! 4.1 yards an average. LaBryan Ray a defensive tackle would shine, with four solo tackles while adding two sacks and three tackles for a loss! The Stars showed out on Memorial Day Weekend, what a game from the whole Stars group. Continuing to lead the North!

Pittsburgh Maulers (2-5):

Despite the loss, the Maulers played one hell of a game. The offense was okay, the Defensive side of the ball could use some work, and the Special teamers were phenomenal! Troy Williams the Maulers QB would go 18-28 with 145 passing yards a touchdown and an interception. Williams would do some work on the ground, with 11 rushing attempts for 44 yards. Good numbers from the signal-caller. Josh Simmons was phenomenal in the return game! Seven Returns for 233 yards and a touchdown. The Maulers have a “Hidden Gem” In Josh Simmons.

Memphis Showboats (4-3):

Woah, The Showboats knocked off one of the best teams of the whole USFL. The Showboats beat the high-powered Houston Gamblers. Cole Kelley was throwing dots left and right, 12-24 passes for 146 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. An overall QBR of 79.5 while adding a completion percentage of 50%. Some numbers need of improvement of course however, ever since Kelley stepped in the Showboats have never turned around. Four straight wins for this team! Kenneth Whyte would shine in the week seven win, 19 rushing attempts for 81 yards, Not bad Numbers at all! Derrick Dillon Mr. Do it all. This kid is crazy good, the week six Special Teams Player of the Week had two receptions for 72 yards and a touchdown; he should up when the team needed him the most. Greg Reaves, a linebacker would record an interception as well. The Showboats have shown up, watch out.

Houston Gamblers (4-3):

The Houston Gamblers fall just short of winning vs the Memphis Showboats, the Gamblers would be defeated 23-20. Kenji Bahar was not on target today, arguably the worst day of his career. 18 out of 39 passes for 216 yards with two interceptions. Absolutely Dreadful numbers from the Gamblers signal-caller. 46.2% completion percentage and a horrendous QBR of 42.3. Mark Thompson would only get the ball 13 times and would record 42 rushing yards, he would find the endzone two times though. No one really showed up for the Gamblers today, kinda surprising. Josh Pederson a tightend would have himself a great game though, with five receptions for 93 yards. Good game from the TE! Manny Bunch a Safety would have a good game too, with 11 tackles with one sack, and an interception. Good game from Bunch. The Gamblers have fallen from that top spot, still one of the best teams in the whole USFL.

New Jersey Generals (2-5):

The New Jersey Generals would play a good all around however they would fall to two and five, Deandre Johnson the Generals signal-caller was playing a great game until he got a head injury that knocked him out. Johnson was nine out of fourteen for 89 yards with a touchdown. He finished the day with a competition of 64.% and a QBR of 106. Kyle Lauletta would have to be the next man up, the QB was okay; nine out of sixteen for 112 yards with two touchdowns. An overall QBR of 117.7 and a percentage of 56.2%. Lauletta would play okay, nothing too special. Alonzo Moore, Have yourself a day! The wideout would record six receptions for 63 yards and two touchdowns! Good numbers from the WR, Moore seems to be improving each and every week. New Jersey looks to bounce back next week!

Michigan Panthers (3-4):

What a day from the Panthers Offense! Josh Love was on fire, after being quiet for a few games he lit it up on Memorial Day Weekend! 16 out of 29 for 264 yards with THREE touchdowns! The kid performed extraordinarily! 120.5 QBR from Love today and he had a completion percentage of 55.2%! Reggie Corbin would play with heart, with 20 rushing attempts for 78 yards! Good numbers from Corbin. Joe Walker would have an amazing game, five receptions for 121 yards with one touchdown. THE KID IS SPECIAL, he is just getting started. Trey Quinn another wide receiver for the Panthers, the former NFL wideout would record 3 receptions for 61 yards and a touchdown. Some may have said the Panthers are done. But guess what? The Michigan Panthers are back!

What a great weekend from the USFL on Memorial Day Weekend, Thank you to all those that have served.
