Player Summary:
5th yr SR and 3 yr full-time starter at SS in the 3-3-5 heavy Nickel defense of LATU. He has solid height, ordinary weight with good speed and above-average length. He is a solid athlete showing a combination of good explosiveness, solid change of direction, balance, acceleration, lateral quickness and agility with solid play speed. He shows fluid hips as he turns and bails in zone and shows solid range as he effectively patrols the hook and flat zone while reading the QB. He reacts quickly to the ball when thrown in his zone and shows above-average closing speed and good hip explosiveness as he makes a big hit on the WR or TE with ordinary contact balance for the tackle preventing a gain of significant yardage. In man coverage, he shows above-average football intelligence as he reads the route of slot WR/TE with average play speed and does a solid job of using his athletic ability and play speed to keep his man in front of him. He is solid against the run overall as he quickly reads run/pass, takes good angles in pursuit and explodes through the hips as he makes the tackle on RB with average size on inside runs. He exhibits good mental toughness as he elevates his game against the run and pass while in the redzone. Ordinary play strength prevents him from quickly disengaging from blocks against slot WR and TE with good play strength and UOH. Average open field tackling due to him going for the big hit and struggling to consistently use proper form when tackling leading to missed tackles on WR, TE and RB with good size and contact balance. He displays sufficient ball skills as he struggles to consistently time his hands correctly when trying to create a PBU and exhibits below-average hands as he drops a potential interception.
Scheme Fit:
SS in man or zone defense.
Power Statement:
Explosive, mentally tough player who plays above-average in coverage and against the run. Lack of quality play strength prevents him from quickly shedding blocks from TE and WR with good play strength and UOH. Inconsistent form tackling leads to missed tackles in the open field against WR/TE with good size and contact balance.
