Report: Browns turned down a trade for Russell Wilson back in 2018 and decided to draft Baker Mayfield instead
Did the Browns really turn down a trade for Russell Wilson?
According to Brady Henderson of ESPN, the Seattle Seahawks were trying to trade Russell Wilson for years. It first started with John Schneider’s love for Patrick Mahomes. The GM had become so enamored with the Texas Tech quarterback that Seattle would have taken him if he had been available late in the first round.
The Seahawks decided to keep Wilson after the Chiefs traded up to the 10th pick with the Bills to select Mahomes.
Well, the next year the young GM would continue to try to find a future quarterback. He would attend Josh Allen’s pro day at Wyoming, and this raised red flags in Wilson’s camp.
The report gets good because the Seahawks wanted to trade for the first pick to get their quarterback.
The Seahawks, according to someone in Wilson’s camp and the Seahawks’ front office, called the Cleveland Browns before the 2018 draft to discuss a trade that would have swapped Wilson for the No. 1 overall pick.
Could the Browns truly turn down this offer? I bet they would have taken it now, but dang this is wild.
Russell’s camp immediately wanted a no-trade clause entered into his contract when working on a new deal. They would eventually get that no-trade clause and Russell would waive this to land with the Broncos.
