Player Summary:
RS SR and 2 yr full-time starter primarily at WLB in the 3-3-5 and 4-2-5 Nickel defense of TNUN. Switched positions from RB in 2019. He has ordinary height, poor weight and adequate speed with good length and a muscular build. He is a good athlete, showing a combination of very good lateral quickness and agility, good explosiveness, COD and acceleration with solid balance and very good play speed. Against the run, he quickly reads run/pass and uses his elite range to play sideline to sideline with very good instincts, play speed, lateral quickness and agility in pursuit. He then delivers a big hit, preventing a potential touchdown on outside runs. On inside runs, he uses his good length, physical toughness, play strength and UOH to shed blocks from IOL with solid size, adequate length and subpar play speed and UOH reaching to the 2nd level. He takes the correct angle in pursuit before making the tackle inside the tackle box. He is solid in zone coverage as he patrols the curl and hook zone with his good AA while reading the QB. In rare instances when he is in man, he shows good ability to stay in phase against TE with subpar play speed on crossing routes and down the seam. He is an above-average pass rusher. On green dog blitzes, he reads the RB and then uses his very good play speed after penetrating the LOS through the open gap before finishing up with a sack or hurry. Solid ball skills allow him to time his hands correctly to disrupt the trajectory of the ball for a PBU. Plays with a good motor, consistently playing to the whistle. Ordinary form tackling ability leads to missed tackles against RB with very good play speed and COD. Marginal overall size and lack of elite play strength prevent him from disengaging against OL with good size, length and UOH against the run. Struggles to make progress as a pass rusher when engaged in 1-on-1 situations against IOL who have good length, UOH and anchor ability.
Scheme Fit:
WLB in 4-3
Power Statement:
Athletic, explosive player who had a breakout season in 2021 and is very good against the run, solid in coverage and can rush the QB when an open lane is available. Will be more productive if he can improve his tackling.
