What made you decide you wanted to be a football player?
Watching all the greats growing up at a young age, ultimately was the reason I wanted to play football.
What are your favorite moments from your football life?
To this point high school football holds my fondest memories. Where I first learned to game of football and made the best memories with brothers I have to this day.
What sets you apart from other defensive backs?
I think my instincts, physicality and work ethic is what sets me apart from other defensive backs.
What type of energy do you bring onto the football field?
I try to bring passionate energy at all times when on the field. When you play with passion that can spread to your other teammates.
If you could hang out with any football player past or present for a day who and why?
I would like to hang with Ed Reed. Growing up he was one of my favorite players to watch, and it would be a honor to talk football with a legend.
What are your favorite things about playing football for Emporia State?
One of my favorite things about playing at Emporia State is playing with a group of guys who love the game as much as I do. Their dedication and love for the game mirrors my own. Secondly the overall culture of the program that Emporia State has built is great. The since of family and loyalty makes me feel at home.
What should we know about Derrick Maxwell Jr the person?
I’m a family oriented person. Love the game of football and also love to live life to the fullest.
What is your favorite coverage and why?
Any deep coverage I have at the safety position is my favorite. You Have to be deepest of the deepest, like playing center field in baseball but have the willingness to make plays when needed.
How do you handle challenges both in life and and on the football field?
I try to face all challenges head on. All challenges in someway make you stronger and builds character.
What would a team get in a player like you?
A player that is willing to learn more about the game anytime. A hard working and passionate player when on the field.
What are you looking forward to in your upcoming season?
Competing with my brothers and enjoying all the moments we create as a team. Can’t forget, winning a championship for the city of Emporia.
Who is the most underrated player you’ve played with and why?
Kelin Gordon, he’s a outstanding man to man corner, that can play with the best of them. Big things coming from him this season.
