Colorado teenage football player Darryl Blackmon died after drowning in an Arizona pool
Darryl Blackmon stood 5 foot 11 inches tall, which is big for 13 years old, and he had dreams of playing in the National Football League someday.
That dream was cut short this week. Darryl’s football team, the Jr. Buffs, are from Denver and traveled to Phoenix to play in a tournament. After a big win Saturday, the team wanted to celebrate with a swim in the pool at Embassy Suites.
People were able to get him from the pool and start chest compressions. He would be taken to the Children’s Hospital where he would remain in critical condition until the night. The young football player died from his injuries.
Darryl’s parents drove 13 hours from Denver to Phoenix, and as they arrived in Phoenix their car overheated and broke down. Even though they had lack of transportation and funds, the Jr. Buffs family made sure Darryl was able to arrive in time to play in the first tournament game.
After a victory game, the Jr. Buffs team went to celebrate and enjoy the win by going swimming at the hotel, which resulted in a tragic drowning accident.
Darryl has 3 older brothers and a baby sister, who was not able to be with him as they’re back home in Denver, CO.
Friends from the Jr. Buffs football team are rallying for their teammates with a GoFundMe page to help fund car repairs and lodging for the family.
Please keep the young football player’s family in your prayers, during this tough time. Rest in Peace young man.
