2022 NCAA Football Preview: Army Black Knights

Andre Carter II is one of the most explosive players in the upcoming NCAA season. The Army will rely a lot on #34!

Army Black Knights

Head Coach: Jeff Monken (96-59, 58-43 at Army)

2021 Record: 9-4

Offense Analysis:

The Black Knights look to stick to business as usual, when it comes to their offensive gameplan, in the upcoming season. In 2021, the Army offense averaged 33 PPG and ranked 2nd in the nation with 280 rushing YPG. This year figures to be no different. The Black Knights return their top three rushes from a year ago, Sr. QB Tyhier Taylor, Jr. SB Tyrell Robinson, and Jr. FB Jakobi Buchanan. Even though passing is not a huge focal point for the Army offense, they are grateful to also be returning their leading receiver, So. WR Isaiah Alston, in 2022. As for the O-Line, Army’s motto has always been next man up. With just two returning starters on the line, it may take a little bit to gel but the Black Knight’s should not be too concerned.

Defense Analysis:

In the 2021 season, the Black Knight defense held opponents to 22 PPG and surrendered 329 YPG. Fortunately for the Army defense, they are returning their best player, Jr. LB Andre Carter II, who is one of the most underrated defensive players in the NCAA. Last season, Carter finished 2nd in the nation in sacks with 15.5 and also added an interception and 4 forced fumbles. Other than Carter, the Black Knight’s LB core will feature new faces as the only other LB with real experience is Jr. LB Spencer Jones, who recorded 19 tackles in 2021. The secondary is more experienced, returning the teams leading pass defenders, Jr. CB Jabari Moore and Sr. S Marquel Broughton, who had 2 interceptions each last year and 120 combined tackles. The Black Knight defense is relatively inexperienced but the pieces that did return were crucial components of the 2021 9-4 campaign.

Summary:

Monken enters in his 9th season as the leader of the West Point football program. In the last two seasons, Monken was able to post back to back 9 win seasons and has won 10 plus games in 4 out of the 8 seasons. More importantly, Monken put an end to Navy’s 14 year streak over the Black Knights and has posted a 4-4 record against the Midshipmen. Army is coming off a great season posting a 9-4 record where 2 losses came at the hands of Wake Forest and Wisconsin, two games that Army kept very close. Army’s offense should not have any problem picking up where they left off and their defense should benefit from the rush heavy offense. Army is looking well equipped to keep their 9 win season streak going.
