Baker Mayfield was screwed by the team that drafted him. Last year, Baker Mayfield busted his butt for the Browns organization playing with an injury the entire year, to get replaced by Deshaun Watson.
Mayfield’s situation is now going from bad to worse. The former number 1 pick in the NFL Draft has no obvious trade partner on the horizon, the team is currently “unwilling to negotiate Mayfield’s release,” according to ESPN.
The Browns committed 230 million guaranteed to Deshaun Watson who could end up being suspended to start the year, and gave Jacoby Brissett 4.65 million to be the back-up, Baker is the odd man out.
So why won’t the team release him?
The Browns found a way to mess this up. They picked up the fifth year option on Mayfield and then gave tons of money to land Deshaun Watson. Now, Baker is not happy and wants to be released. The team however is saying no.
So what is Baker supposed to do? Do you really do this to the guy who took you to your first playoff game in God knows how long? The Browns are hoping to find someone that will pick up some of his money from the guaranteed money, but right now if I am a team even if I am interested I let the Browns cut him. I also would not play if I am Baker. If Watson is suspended and the team wants you to play, I wouldn’t.
I would send all the other 31 teams and say Baker is not willing to suit up for a team that he led to the playoffs, and played injured all year to try to help win. This is not a problem with his character, but this is a move to ensure he is not injured. Someone’s QB will get hurt, and when that happens, Browns will be the first team they call. If they think they can rely on Baker to play for them if Deshaun is suspended, I would not trust that. I wouldn’t play if I was Baker. We will see how this plays out but right now it sounds like it is going to get uglier.
