Panthers OT Russell Okung becomes the first player to receive a salary paid in Bitcoin
Can you believe it? Carolina Panthers offensive tackle Russell Okung just made history in the NFL.
Russell Okung became the first player in the NFL to receive his contract in Bitcoin.
Last May, Okung lobbied his former and current NFL teams to pay him in bitcoin. After reaching out to Strike founder Jack Mallers and working with the Carolina Panthers front office, this is now a reality.
Okung is receiving half of his $13 million base salary for the 2020 season in bitcoin. The company claims that Okung, who is now with the Carolina Panthers, is the first player in league history to receive part of his annual paycheck in the form of a digital currency.
On Tuesday, he indicated that his wish had been granted.
“Paid in Bitcoin,” he wrote on Twitter.
This is pretty cool. I mean shoot, a new method to pay for a salary!
He received 245.33 Bitcoin according to Google.
