2021 NFL Draft Prospect: Shane Buechele, QB, SMU

Shane Buechele is a former Texas Longhorn. After losing out on a starting job in Austin, the ex-Texas Longhorn threw for a career-best 3,929 yards and 34 touchdowns while leading SMU to its first 10-win season since 1984.
Buechele was a dual threat quarterback and a 4 star recruit in high school. In 2016, he decided to choose the University of Texas. He would become the first true freshman to start the season opener for the Longhorns since 1944.
His time in Texas would come to a quick end. Shane started all 12 games as a true freshman leading the team to a 5-7 record. He only completed 60.4 percent of his passes for 2,958 yards and also dropped off 21 touchdowns.
Buechele would end up suffering a shoulder and ankle injury in his second season. He would only play in 2 games.
Sam Ehlinger would take over the reigns at Texas, and Buechele had a decision to make, and it was a simple one for him. He wanted to play.
The 6010 quarterback landed on SMU and boy has it been a blessing. This year Buechele has already thrown for 1,326 yards in just four games. He has 10 passing touchdowns already.
In his young career at SMU he has already thrown for 5,255 yards and 44 touchdowns to just 12 interceptions. He has proven to be a star in the making.
NFL Draft Diamonds Scouting Notes:
Shane Buechele is cementing himself as a top quarterback prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft. I know everyone is going to talk about Trevor Lawrence, Trey Lance and Justin Fields, but Buechele is making all the NFL throws. His size may hurt him a bit but he is playing at a high level. SMU has some solid players and Buechele will get a shot to show he belongs in a major all-star game. He is a prospect I love. – Damond Talbot, NFL Draft Diamonds, Owner
