Chrys Lane Shepherd
Shepherd LB Chrys Lane recently sat down with Draft Diamonds writer Jimmy Williams

Tell us about your university/college. What was your major/minor? How is campus life?

Shepherd University is a small public school in West Virginia with a very hands on approach from professors and advisors with a thriving athletic department. One of the best in the nation.

What do your teammates say is your best quality?

My teammates might say my best quality is my natural ability to lead and my enforer mentality to show an opponent that you will know our present every play run or pass.

What kind of role do you see yourself in on the team? What scheme and/or position suits your skill set?

I see myself as a leader above all else.  I’m someone that lets my actions do all the speaking for me but constantly willing to help and learning to better the team.

I can play in any defensive scheme. I’m a linebacker that can do it all: cover, hit, and blitz. My skill set is rare combination enforcer mentality with sideline to sideline speed

Who is the best player you have ever played against in college?

I played against a lot of talented players but the most talented player I played against is Jaleel McLaughlin. He has the ability to hit home runs at any moment.

Which one of your teammates impresses you the most?

My most impressive teammate I have is Poncé de Leon. He has a desire like no other and it’s always tiring to get better from film to the field to the weight room.

Describe a time in your life when you were able to overcome a struggle.

My Sophomore year I was going through a custody battle while in season and maintaining grades in school, while having to play on Saturday and go to court on Monday and Wednesday while going to class was tough but I persevered by the grace of God.

If you didn’t play football, what other sport would you play?

I would have probably run track. I only ran one year but I made it to states and placed. I feel like if I would have stated earlier. I would have done some amazing things

What is something that you are most proud of? What would you say is your biggest achievement?

My proudest moment has to be becoming a father. My biggest achievement has to be making it to college and having a baby at 15. I never thought I’d be at this point in my life plus being the first in my family to do this is truly a blessing.

Describe one of the most memorable plays of your collegiate career.

It has to be my first college snap running down kickoff and thinking in my head I really play college football. That was just a dream.

Do you have a favorite athlete or professional team? Is there a player that you model your game after?

My favorite team is the Ravens. I model my game after many players. I take a little from Devin Bush, NaVorro Bowman and Bobby Wagner and of course the greats like Ray Lewis ,Jessie Tuggle and Mike Singletary.

Who is your favorite music artist? What gets you pumped before a game?

I listen to a lot of different music. I don’t really have a favorite artist. I don’t really listen to music before a game. I like to watch and observe what is going on and envision the game plan for this game in front of us.

What is your favorite comfort food?

My favorite comfort food has to be baked fish with garlic mashed potatoes and broccoli with cheese.

Do you have a favorite movie or actor?

My favorite movie is Troy with Brad Pit, but my favorite actor is Leonardo DiCaprio

What do you do in your spare time? Do you have any hobbies?

In my spare time, I love to bake with my daughter and niece. One hobby of mine is watching historical tv shows like Vikings

Who or what motivates you the most?

My motivation is my mother. She is the strongest person I know. She grew up an orphan after my grandparent died in a fire when she was six. My mother has worked two or three jobs at one time my whole life or at least since I could remember just to provide a house for me and four brothers and has never had time to enjoy herself. She is my why. She is the reason I do everything and go as hard as I do. I hope one day God will give me the opportunity to provide a better life for her.
