Western New Mexico University freshman WR dies in a drowning incident
The Division 2 football season is about to kick-off and the Western New Mexico Mustangs are going to have to start the season one man short.
Freshman wide receiver Eddie Cruz (18), died on Monday in a drowning incident.
“We are devastated by the loss of this student. Eddie was a phenomenal kid with a bright future,” WNMU president Dr. Joseph Shepard said in a statement.
“Eddie will always be a part of our Mustang family,” the school’s athletic director, Scott Noble, said in his statement. “We are thinking of and praying for his loved ones during this extremely difficult time.”
Cruz drowned in the Bill Evans Lake, and search and rescue teams were able to discover his body in roughly four hours. This Saturday WNMU is expected to take on Ottawa University in Arizona.
