New York Giants could save some big money if they cut Victor Cruz
Should the New York Giants cut Victor Cruz? That is the question that many are asking because Cruz’s cap number is high for a player that is coming off a very difficult injury to recover from and not being able to rebound the way he wanted. With the emergence of Odell Beckham Jr. , you would think the Giants would love to keep them both, since Cruz was a stud in 2011. Well if that is going to happen a restructured contract may have to take place. According to Dan Graziano of ESPN, the Giants could save 6.1 million in salary cap by dumping Cruz.
The Giants would save only $2.45 million against this year’s cap if they cut Cruz now, and they have no reason to do so. Especially because of the injury, it wouldn’t save them any real money anyway. But the cap savings jumps to $6.1 million if they cut him next offseason, and when you’re dealing with numbers like that, you’d be foolish not to assess your leverage and decide whether to seek a restructure.
If I was Victor Cruz, I would restructure my deal, but will he? Remember he has Jay-Z’s Roc Nation as his agency, they might not be willing to re-work a deal, especially with some of the money these other wide receivers are getting in free agency…..
