49ers bring back running back Alfonso Smith
Running back Alfonso Smith, who was among the 49ers’ final cuts of training camp, is returning to the team. Smith worked out for the 49ers this week.
The 49ers have kept just two running backs – Frank Gore and Carlos Hyde — on their 53-man roster through the first nine games of the season. The club expected to activate Marcus Lattimore to their active roster by the end of the season, but Lattimore last week announced his retirement.
Smith, 27, spent four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, seeing action in 43 games. He was used primarily on special teams. He has 48 career rushing attempts for 156 yards and two touchdowns.
