Since 1999, the New England Patriots have only used 3 starting quarterbacks; Browns had 20
How important is Tom Brady? Well since 1999, only 3 quarterbacks have started for the Patriots. Tom Brady obviously is one, while Brady’s former competition Drew Bledsoe was another. The only other QB to start a game was Matt Cassell who is currently the starting QB for the Vikings.
The Patriots like to have their heir apparant waiting in the wings. Well, if you look at the Patriots QB situation, since 1994 only four total guys have started at the QB position. That is pretty impressive. That fourth member was Scott Zolak who started 3 games as Drew Bledsoe’s back-up from 1995-1998.
If you really want to see how important it is to have a guy waiting and ready, look at the Cleveland Browns, who since 1999 have drafted more quarterbacks in the first round. That is a true testiment of the Patriots system.
