Grading the Draft: Indianapolis Colts edition
Sports Ruckus writer Jesse Peel has graded the entire AFC South, and some Colts fans might not like his grading, but he has some very valid points. Let’s see what the Colts finished with.
Draft Needs-OL, S, CB, DT
Key Additions: CB Vontae Davis (four years, $36 million), DE Arthur Jones (five years, $33 million), WR Hakeem Nicks (one year, $3.985 million), OC Phil Costa ($2.75 million), LB D’Qwell Jackson (four years, $22 million)
Key Losses: SS Antoine Bethea (San Francisco), RB Donald Brown (San Diego), LB Kavell Conner (San Diego), LB Pat Angerer (cut)
The Colts are one of the teams on this list with a solidified franchise QB and with the most parts to build on. So with a QB like Andrew they need some skill in the draft to go with that kind of Luck (sorry, couldn’t help myself). With that being said, you’d figure they would be a little more aggressive in the draft-maybe move up to get more talent to protect their money man or add a dynamic TE like Ebron. The Colts took Jack Mewhort, offensive tackle, who is the typical Big Ten lineman (looks like he’s been tossing bales of hay at practice) , good hands but can at times get caught reaching. The “peeing” incident (google it) in 2012 shouldn’t draw any question marks. A good pick for the second round. Donte’ Moncrief is a nice addition to this wide receiver core and they did acquire some real talented veterans in free agency but after the third round it gets really underwhelming. Like The Godfather 3 underwhelming (wait, that was harsh-I apologize).
Draft Grade: C- (would’ve been a D+ if it wasn’t for the Godfather shot)
