Former NFL Scout tells us the Bills draft was the best of any

Today a retired NFL scout told our staff today that the Buffalo Bills getting a C- by Mel Kiper Jr, is a shame.  The former NFL scout, said he understands the need to move up and take a playmaker like Sammy Watkins.

Today I asked a retired NFL Scout what he thought of the Buffalo Bills draft, and he first had to comment on the grade that Mel Kiper Jr. gave the Bills.

“First off, I don’t know what the heck Mel Kiper Jr., is looking at.  If you look at the players the Buffalo Bills selected in the draft, they did a very solid job at adding players that can come in and contribute right away. You cannot grade a draft on what you have to give up for a player.  Would you give the Falcons a C-, for giving up a first to get Julio Jones?”

“I just feel that Mel Kiper Jr., knows that the Bills fan base will get upset, and help him gain views on his page.  I personally feel the staff in Buffalo did a great job.”

When I asked him about Sammy Watkins

“If you had to trade up for any player in this draft, it better be for Jake Matthews, Khalil Mack or Sammy Watkins.  The Buffalo Bills did something they usually don’t do. That is good for them, because they have not been winning lately.  It might take a trade like that to push them over the edge.  This team needs to change.  They cannot keep going forward with the same mediocre approach.  I love the pick and, I give this pick an A+.  He is a top tier player and will be a future Pro-Bowler in the NFL.”

Cyrus Kouandjio, Cyril Richardson and Seantrel Henderson

“Just look at those names, that is like a 1000 pounds of meat.  Koundjio should have been a first rounder, several doctors cleared his knee.  Many teams were scared of him for no reason.  He will be fine, his knees checked out with several doctors and they had proof.  Richardson is a monster on the interior, he should come in and start from day one.  He is a very mean, aggressive run blocker.  If he gets in front of the back, the hole parts like the Red Sea.  For Seantrel, he was my top rated offensive tackle behind Matthews.  I watched almost every game, and this kid is legit. He should have been a first round pick.  I understand he had off the field problems, but he came clean from what I know.  He admitted he used drugs, which is huge.  It is not that often you get a kid that is willing to admit he made a mistake.  He will play with a chip on his shoulder, and the Bills could have found a true Diamond in the Rough with this pick.  So if you give these picks anything less than an A your crazy.”

That is four players right there that grade out an A, so I asked him about the rest of the guys.

“Ross Cockrell is a fiesty kid, he gave Mike Evans a run for his money in that Bowl game, and I feel he could come in and play the slot from day one. He is a bigger kid that is does not shy away from contact. He has great hips, and catches the ball well, I like this kid.  The FAU kid, I don’t know much about, I really didn’t get to watch too much film on them.  Preston Brown is a good player, he was not my top rated inside linebacker, but if you are looking for a run stopper, he is your guy.  Preston is very good against the run.  He will come in and compete from day one.  With Jim Schwartz, the Bills defense will be great against the run, he has proven that from every team he has been with.”

So I asked him the overall grade of the team:

“Well I can guarantee you this, it is not a C-, I would say somewhere between a A and an A-. The Buffalo Bills have been doing a great job drafting under Doug Whaley, and I think it will pay off”
