GM’s stayed away from Kerry Rhodes for a rumor of being gay, why would that change for Sam?
Last year, Kerry Rhodes the veteran safety and one of the best players in 2012 according to PFF sat out all season because no team would give him a shot, after pictures of him and a man were posted on the internet. It’s odd to see a veteran free-agent safety — a starter the year before — go jobless in a league where plenty of teams could use a steady presence in their secondary.
So the 31-year-old Rhodes remains on the sidelines, for reasons that don’t seem to make much sense. In a league where quarterbacks are ascendant, why wouldn’t a team with problems defending the pass take a flier on a safety who’s been consistently serviceable and sometimes very good since entering the league in 2005? If teams are blackballing Kerry Rhodes for a rumor about him being gay, why would a team want to draft Michael Sam? What has changed in a year?
All week the only thing that has been on the television is Michael Sam. The guy went from 5k twitter followers to well over 72.8K followers after announcing he was gay. He became one of the fastest growing icons in the NFL and he played zero snaps. He actually admitted he was gay, while Kerry Rhodes denied a man’s claim that he was Rhodes lover. This was after the alleged man posted pictures of Rhodes and him together on numerous occasions. Since then Kerry Rhodes has found a girlfriend and made sure that went public, but will a team be able to overlook the past of Rhodes?
I thought Kerry Rhodes was a very solid football player who should be in the league, the guy never even had a workout. So to all the people out there thinking Michael Sam’s path is going to be easy, I would beg to differ. These Owner’s and GM’s are sitting there saying it is about the football player and his skills, but we will see come draft day if those teams select him. They will say they had THIS guy rated higher at that point. Someone will probably draft Sam, because he is a talented football player, but if you don’t think he is going to take some backlash you are crazy.
I for one do not agree with or promote it, but it is not about sin it is about equality. I am supposed to treat everyone equal so for that being said I would not be surprised to see Michael Sam’s stock drop come draft day. We cannot control racism in our own country, poverty in our own country, and violence of our youth, how will Americans just open their arms widely for something they are not use too? I am telling you do not be surprised if his path is similar to Kerry Rhodes…..
