Martin Mayhew states the Lions might utilize the “Franchise tag” on Brandon Pettigrew
Detroit Lions tight end Brandon Pettigrew is the teams most prominent pending free agent, and Mayhew said he’s “not sure yet” whether the franchise tag will be an option to keep the soon-to-be 29-year-old off the market.
Pettigrew has seen his receiving numbers fall each of the last two seasons, and he was forced into more of a blocking role this year because of the Lions’ personnel deficiencies at the position.
The franchise tag for tight ends for 2014 projects to be around $6.7 million. The Lions already are over next year’s expected salary cap, though they have ways to free money.
I think the Lions would be making a mistake to keep Pettigrew, his skills are there but he has not proven himself to get top 5 tight end money. It would be a huge mistake if you ask me.
