Giants Trade for J.J. McCarthy in Move to Bolster Quarterback Room

The New York Giants have made a major move to add another young quarterback to their roster, acquiring former first-round pick J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings.

The Giants are sending a 2027 fifth-round draft pick to Minnesota in exchange for McCarthy. The trade is pending McCarthy passing a physical.

The move comes after Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart suffered a season-ending knee injury, leaving veteran Jameis Winston as New York’s starter.

Giants Add Former First-Round Pick

McCarthy was selected by the Vikings with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft after leading Michigan to a national championship under head coach Jim Harbaugh.

Now, McCarthy will reunite with another member of the Harbaugh family.

Giants head coach John Harbaugh expressed excitement about adding the young quarterback, describing McCarthy as a strong young quarterback with NFL experience and significant talent.

The connection to the Harbaugh family is certainly an interesting storyline. McCarthy developed under Jim Harbaugh at Michigan, and John Harbaugh now gets an opportunity to work with the quarterback in New York.

McCarthy’s Time in Minnesota Comes to an End

McCarthy’s tenure with the Vikings never developed the way the organization hoped.

The quarterback missed his entire rookie season after suffering a knee injury during the 2024 preseason.

He returned in 2025 and eventually made 10 starts, completing 57.6 percent of his passes for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

McCarthy entered the 2026 season competing for a role in Minnesota’s quarterback room, but the Vikings ultimately moved forward with Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz ahead of him.

That left McCarthy on the outside looking in, creating an opportunity for Minnesota to move the former first-round selection.

Why Did the Giants Make the Move?

The Giants’ quarterback situation changed dramatically following Dart’s injury.

Winston started Sunday’s game against Tennessee and helped New York secure a 12-7 victory, but the Giants were still searching for additional quarterback depth.

New York had already added Jake Haener to the active roster, but McCarthy represents a much different type of acquisition.

He’s a former top-10 pick who is only 23 years old and has already experienced starting NFL games.

For the Giants, the trade gives them another young quarterback with significant draft pedigree and developmental upside.

Jameis Winston Remains the Starter — For Now

Despite acquiring McCarthy, John Harbaugh has made it clear that Jameis Winston will remain the Giants’ starting quarterback for Week 4 against the Arizona Cardinals.

Harbaugh also acknowledged that getting McCarthy comfortable in a new offense during the season will be a challenge.

That means McCarthy isn’t being thrown immediately into the fire.

Instead, he will have an opportunity to learn the offense, work with the coaching staff and familiarize himself with his new teammates.

How quickly he picks up the system could determine when — or if — he gets his opportunity this season.

A Fresh Start for J.J. McCarthy

For McCarthy, this trade represents a fresh start.

The former Michigan star entered the NFL with enormous expectations after being selected 10th overall. His time in Minnesota was disrupted by injury and inconsistent play, ultimately leading to the Vikings moving on.

Now he gets another opportunity with a Giants organization that conducted extensive scouting on him during the 2024 draft process.

The Giants ultimately selected Malik Nabers at No. 6 overall in that draft, but McCarthy was clearly a quarterback they had evaluated closely.

Now, two years later, McCarthy is finally a member of the Giants.

What Comes Next?

The immediate plan appears to be simple: Winston starts, McCarthy learns.

But the NFL can change quickly.

If Winston struggles, McCarthy could eventually receive an opportunity. If McCarthy shows significant progress in the Giants’ offense, the organization will have another intriguing option at quarterback moving forward.

For a player who was once viewed as one of the top quarterback prospects in the 2024 NFL Draft, the next chapter of his career begins in New York.

The Giants are betting that a change of scenery — and a familiar Harbaugh connection — could help McCarthy rediscover the player who made him a top-10 selection just two years ago.
