A high school football star was shot and killed in Compton, California. William Leapart a talented football player who played at Tustin High School is being remembered for his big heart, infectious personality and the positive impact he made on the people around him.

Leapart, 19, graduated from Tustin High School in 2024, where he earned the respect of his teammates and coaching staff as a member of the Tillers football program. Raised in Compton, Leapart transferred to Tustin to pursue his passion for football and quickly became part of the school’s football family.

Those who knew him say his impact extended well beyond the football field.

Off the field, Leapart was known as someone who cared about others. In the months leading up to his death, he had been working as a caregiver at an elderly living center, dedicating his time to helping and caring for others.

He was also preparing for the next chapter of his life. Leapart was scheduled to begin community college in the fall, giving his family and friends hopes of watching him continue to grow and pursue his future.

Instead, those plans were tragically cut short.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were called shortly before 10 p.m. on August 13 to the area of South Stanford Avenue in Compton after receiving a report that a vehicle had crashed into a telephone pole.

When deputies arrived, they found Leapart inside the vehicle. He had suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead.

He was only 19 years old.

For those who knew Leapart through football, his death represents the loss of a young man who still had so much ahead of him. He had already established himself as a respected member of the Tustin football community, but his friends and loved ones say the person he was away from the game was just as important.

Football may have introduced Leapart to many of the people who knew him, but his character is what they will remember.

A high school football career can be measured in statistics, wins, tackles, touchdowns and championships. But for the people who shared a locker room, classroom or friendship with Leapart, his legacy will be measured differently — by the kindness he showed, the people he helped and the personality that made him stand out.

His decision to work as a caregiver while preparing for college speaks to the kind of young man those closest to him knew him to be: someone willing to give his time to help others.

Now, a community is left mourning a life that ended far too soon.

William Leapart was a football player, a son, a friend, a caregiver, a student and a young man with a future still waiting to be written.

That future was taken from him at just 19.

As his loved ones remember him, the hope is that the story of William Leapart will not simply be defined by the circumstances of his death, but by the way he lived — with personality, compassion, determination and a heart that left an impression on those fortunate enough to know him.

May William Leapart be remembered for the life he lived, the people he touched and the potential he carried with him.
