Aaron Donald Considering NFL Comeback as Rams Leave Door Open for Defensive Legend

Former Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald is carefully evaluating the possibility of returning to the NFL, and head coach Sean McVay says the team would welcome him back if he decides he is ready to play again.

Donald, widely regarded as one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history, retired in March 2024 after a dominant 10-year career. However, speculation about a potential comeback began after the Rams made a blockbuster move to acquire star pass rusher Myles Garrett, creating the possibility of Donald returning to the field alongside the reigning Defensive Player of the Year.

McVay said Donald is approaching the decision with the same dedication and preparation that made him one of the league’s most feared defenders.

“For those of you guys that do know Aaron, he’s very diligent,” McVay said. “Anything that he does, he does all-in. And so he’s going through a very strict, regimented process that was similar to what he did when he played.”

The Rams head coach admitted that he does not yet know what decision Donald will make but believes the future Hall of Famer will only return if he feels physically capable of competing at the highest level.

“If he feels good, then you guys know he’s going to be ready to rock,” McVay said.

Donald is reportedly putting himself through intense training to determine how his body responds to the demands of preparing for another NFL season. The process will help him decide whether he can handle the physical toll of playing defensive tackle at the highest level.

“We’ll see how his body’s responding to some of the training and the way that he puts himself through the paces to know what it looks and feels like to be ready to take on what the rigors of an NFL season entail,” McVay said.

During his legendary career with the Rams, Donald earned three Defensive Player of the Year awards, 10 Pro Bowl selections, eight first-team All-Pro honors, and helped lead Los Angeles to a Super Bowl LVI championship.

While there is no guarantee that Donald will return, the Rams have made it clear that the door is open. If the superstar defensive tackle determines he still has the ability and desire to compete, Los Angeles appears ready to make room for one of the most dominant players the game has ever seen.
