Jonnu Smith Draws Trade Interest from Steelers Amid Contract Talks with Dolphins

Miami Dolphins tight end Jonnu Smith has become the subject of trade discussions with the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The talks come as Smith has reportedly expressed a desire to restructure the two-year contract he signed last offseason. He is currently set to earn $4.8 million in 2025 but did not attend Miami’s voluntary OTA sessions this week.

The Steelers’ interest in Smith is heavily influenced by offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, who has a well-established connection with the veteran tight end. Arthur Smith previously coached Jonnu Smith in Tennessee—first as his tight ends coach, then as offensive coordinator—before trading for him again during his time as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. Their history makes Pittsburgh a natural landing spot should Miami decide to move on.

Smith, 28, is coming off the best season of his career, setting franchise records for a Dolphins tight end with 88 receptions and 884 receiving yards. His breakout performance earned him his first career Pro Bowl selection. Smith led all Miami receivers in catches and ranked fourth among NFL tight ends in receiving yards, trailing only Brock Bowers, Trey McBride, and George Kittle.

His productivity, leadership, and familiarity with Arthur Smith’s offensive system make him a valuable asset for any team in need of a dynamic, pass-catching tight end. Whether Miami reworks his contract or completes a trade with Pittsburgh, Jonnu Smith has made it clear he’s a player worth watching as the 2025 season approaches.
