Who were the biggest draft busts in NFL History?

The NFL Draft has a lot of hype around it every year. If you are considered a top prospect in the NFL Draft, there is a lot of stress with living up to the hype. I wanted to break down 8 prospects who struggled badly to live up to their draft spot.

Many of these players had a ton of hype but did not turn out to be very good in the NFL. In college they were amazing, but boy did they struggle in the league.

  1. JaMarcus Russell (2007): Selected as the first overall pick by the Oakland Raiders, JaMarcus Russell is often regarded as one of the biggest draft busts in NFL history. He struggled with weight issues, work ethic problems, and poor on-field performance, leading to his release after just three seasons.
  2. Ryan Leaf (1998): Ryan Leaf was selected as the second overall pick by the San Diego Chargers in the same draft as Peyton Manning. Leaf’s career was marred by attitude issues, poor performances, and clashes with coaches and teammates, leading to his eventual departure from the NFL after just four seasons.
  3. Tony Mandarich (1989): Tony Mandarich was selected as the second overall pick by the Green Bay Packers. He was considered one of the best offensive line prospects in NFL history, but his performance on the field didn’t live up to the hype, and he struggled with personal issues and substance abuse during his career.
  4. Akili Smith (1999): The Cincinnati Bengals selected Akili Smith as the third overall pick. Despite high expectations, Smith struggled to adapt to the NFL game and couldn’t establish himself as a successful starting quarterback, leading to his early departure from the league.
  5. Tim Couch (1999): Selected as the first overall pick by the Cleveland Browns, Tim Couch faced immense pressure as the franchise’s first pick after its return to the NFL. He had a few productive seasons but didn’t meet the expectations of a first overall selection.
  6. Art Schlichter (1982): Art Schlichter was drafted fourth overall by the Baltimore Colts but had a troubled career due to gambling addiction and off-field issues that led to his suspension and eventual exit from the league.
  7. Lawrence Phillips (1996): Lawrence Phillips was selected sixth overall by the St. Louis Rams. Despite showing potential on the field, his career was plagued by legal issues, violence, and personal problems, resulting in his departure from the NFL after just a few seasons.
  8. Trent Richardson (2012): The Cleveland Browns selected Trent Richardson as the third overall pick. He failed to live up to expectations and struggled to produce consistently as a running back, resulting in a short and disappointing NFL career.

These players were drafted with high expectations, but their careers didn’t pan out as anticipated, making them some of the biggest draft busts in NFL history.

It’s essential to remember that the evaluation of players and their career trajectories can evolve over time, and new players might have emerged since my last update.
