Rams Shore Up Secondary, Trade for All-Pro CB Trent McDuffie from Chiefs

The Los Angeles Rams made a major move to shore up their secondary, acquiring All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie from the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for Pick No. 29, a fifth-round pick, a sixth-round pick, and a 2027 third-round selection.

The trade immediately addresses one of the Rams’ biggest weaknesses entering the offseason while giving the Chiefs valuable assets to help rebuild a depleted roster.

Rams Address Major Need at Cornerback

Four of the Rams’ six cornerbacks are set to hit free agency this offseason. Several are not expected to return.

Veteran Darious Williams is a likely cap casualty. Releasing Williams would save the Rams approximately $7.5 million while carrying only $1.1 million in dead cap.

Williams averaged just 45% of the defensive snaps during the postseason. That usage suggests the Rams may already be preparing to move on. This would leave Emmanuel Forbes as the only notable returning player. According to PFF, he ranked 93rd out of 114 eligible cornerbacks.

There was a clear need to improve at the cornerback position.

McDuffie Brings Elite Production

Trent McDuffie immediately changes the outlook of the Rams secondary.

The 25-year-old cornerback is already a former All-Pro and one of the league’s best coverage defenders. In 2025, McDuffie ranked 12th out of 114 cornerbacks.

He now gives Los Angeles a legitimate No. 1 corner.

His impact becomes even clearer when looking at defensive efficiency metrics.

The Rams ranked 27th in the NFL in opponent yards per attempt allowed, giving up 8.1 yards per pass attempt.

Kansas City ranked 5th in the league, allowing just 6.6 yards per attempt with McDuffie leading their secondary.

Elite pass defenses consistently appear in championship runs. According to Sports Info Solutions, both Super Bowl teams ranked among the league’s top four defenses in yards per attempt allowed.

  • Patriots: 6.6 YPA (4th)
  • Seahawks: 5.3 YPA (1st)

For a Rams team with Super Bowl aspirations, it’s clear improving pass defense is critical.

Rams Still Hold a Premium Draft Pick

Los Angeles was able to make this move without sacrificing its best draft asset.

The Rams previously acquired an additional first-round pick from the Atlanta Falcons. Because of that deal, Los Angeles will still select 13th overall in the upcoming draft.

That flexibility allowed the Rams to trade Pick No. 29 while not completely punting on their future.

With reigning MVP Matthew Stafford entering what could be his final season of his career, the Rams appear to be all in for another Super Bowl.

Major Contract Decisions Coming Soon

While the trade strengthens the roster immediately, it also creates future financial challenges.

Several key Rams players on rookie contracts will soon need extensions.

Projected extensions include:

  • Trent McDuffie — $30+ million per season
  • Puka Nacua — $42+ million per season
  • Kobie Turner — $25+ million per season
  • Byron Young — $20+ million per season
  • Steve Avila — $15+ million per season

With McDuffie being added to the list, it will be tough to imagine 5 players receiving extensions.

Chiefs Add Valuable Draft Capital

From Kansas City’s perspective, the trade helps their outlook on the future.

The Chiefs knew they wouldn’t be able to afford McDuffie’s next contract. Moving him now allowed them to maximize his value.

Kansas City now holds the following picks in the 2026 NFL Draft:

Round 1: No. 9
Round 1: No. 29
Round 2: No. 40
Round 3: No. 74
Round 4: No. 109
Round 5: No. 147
Round 5: No. 168
Round 5: No. 177
Round 6: No. 210

According to OverTheCap, the Chiefs now rank fourth in the NFL in total draft capital.

This gives Kansas City the flexibility to rebuild key areas of the roster.

Young Corners Give Chiefs Confidence

Kansas City has shown a willingness to move on from expensive defensive backs. In fact, the last time the Chiefs extended a defensive-back that they drafted was Eric Berry in 2017. We most recently. watched the Chiefs move on from a star CB following the 2023 season when they traded L’Jarius Sneed before he signed a four-year, $76 million deal with the Tennessee Titans.

This situation is not new to the Chiefs and they may also feel comfortable thanks to the development of younger players.

Jaylen Watson and Nohl Williams both performed well in 2025. According to PFF:

Jaylen Watson will require an extension as a current free agent but expect the Chiefs to sign him on a deal worth around $15 million annually. A much needed discount from McDuffie’s projected contract.

A Rare Win-Win Trade

It’s rare to evaluate a major NFL trade and see both teams benefit immediately. This deal appears to be one of those cases.

The Chiefs gain a valuable package of draft selections that helps reshape the roster around Patrick Mahomes.

And for Los Angeles, the message is clear.

The push for another Super Bowl run starts now.
