Former NFL Player and Super Bowl Champion Barry Wilburn Dies in Memphis House Fire

Family and friends are mourning the loss of former NFL defensive back and Super Bowl champion Barry Wilburn, who tragically died in a house fire early Friday morning in Memphis.

Wilburn’s family confirmed that he was the victim of a residential fire that occurred in the Orange Mound community. The Memphis Fire Department responded to a call regarding a structure fire on Douglass Avenue at approximately 2:00 a.m. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered an unresponsive individual in a rear hallway of the home. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. While the Memphis Fire Department has not officially released the victim’s identity, a family representative confirmed that Wilburn was the individual who lost his life.

A Memphis native, Wilburn graduated from Melrose High School before going on to play college football at Ole Miss. He was selected by the Washington Redskins in the 1985 NFL Draft and spent five seasons with the organization as a defensive back.

Wilburn enjoyed a standout professional career, leading the NFL in interceptions during the 1987 season. That same year, he played a key role in Washington’s championship run, culminating in a victory over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXII.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and officials have not released additional details at this time.
