Texas Junior High School football player dies after passing out during off-season practice

A 16-year-old junior at Stevens High School has died after collapsing during an off-season athletic practice, school officials confirmed.
The student, identified as Jaren Troy Lawson, passed out during football-related conditioning on Tuesday. According to the school, Lawson was evaluated on the field by athletic trainers before being transported by emergency medical services to a local hospital. He died shortly after midnight early Wednesday morning.
School officials said the campus principal has notified the school community and that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is underway. Officials with Northside ISD emphasized that Lawson’s death occurred at the hospital, not on school grounds.
The district also confirmed that Lawson’s coach accompanied him to the hospital and remained there for much of the evening. Counseling resources are being made available to students and staff as the community mourns the loss of the teenager.
