Mike Tomlin Calls Time On His Lengthy Steelers Reign After Playoff Loss

Long-serving head coach Mike Tomlin has stepped down after 19 years leading the Pittsburgh Steelers. The 53-year-old decided to call it quits after his team was defeated by the Houston Texans in the AFC wild-card round.
The decision, according to most, was not a major surprise, and many pundits predict that Tomlin would have been fired had he not chosen to fall on his sword. Tomlin achieved a great deal during his lengthy tenure at the Acrisure Stadium, albeit many of his successes came in his early seasons in charge of the Steelers.
Steelers fans who are confident that whoever comes in to replace Tomlin will lead them to glory can back those aspirations with a wager, in which case this NFL betting guide could come in very useful indeed. Tomlin took over at Pittsburgh way back in 2007 and in his second season led the team to Super Bowl glory, with the Steelers beating the Arizona Cardinals 27-23 in Tampa. He was a consistent performer, helping the Steelers reach the playoffs in four successive seasons between 2014 and 2017.
However, making a deep run in the postseason had proven tough, with Tomlin’s team being knocked out at the first hurdle in five of the last six seasons, and it seems enough was enough for all parties.
Discussing his departure released a statement outlining the reasons for his decision, explaining.
“This organization has been a huge part of my life for many years, and it has been an absolute honor to lead this team.”
“I am deeply grateful to Art Rooney II and the late Ambassador Rooney for their trust and support. I am also thankful to the players who gave everything they had every day, and to the coaches and staff whose commitment and dedication made this journey so meaningful.”
“I want to also thank Steelers Nation. Your passion, loyalty, and high expectations represent what makes this franchise truly special. Coaching in Pittsburgh is unlike anywhere else, and I will always take great pride in having been a steward of this team.” Tomlin concluded.
Art Rooney II, Pittsburgh Steelers president, responded to Tomlin’s decision, commenting.
“During our meeting today, Coach Tomlin informed me that he has decided to step down as our Head Coach,”
“Obviously, I am extremely grateful to Mike for all the hard work, dedication and success we have shared over the last 19 years.”
“It is hard for me to put into words the level of respect and appreciation I have for Coach Tomlin,”
“He guided the franchise to our sixth Super Bowl championship and made the playoffs 13 times during his tenure, including winning the AFC North eight times in his career. His track record of never having a losing season in 19 years will likely never be duplicated.”
“My family and I, and everyone connected to Steelers management, are forever grateful for the passion and dedication Mike Tomlin has devoted to Steelers football,”Rooney added.
Tomlin still had two years to run on his current deal, but opted to bring things to a close. He is not expected to be coaching in the NFL next season. That said, some have speculated he may take over at the Philadelphia Eagles following Nick Sirianni’s exit.
