How Often Do High-Rated Draft Prospects Go On To Have Big First Seasons?

The NFL Draft is an exciting time of year, with the futures of players and teams being decided. But how often do high-rated draft prospects actually go on to deliver quickly and make big impacts in games and on betting markets?
The NFL Draft is one of the high points of the NFL season for many people. Teams get to draft new talent, players get the opportunity to start their careers with big-name teams and the whole shebang is covered and hyped up with lots of media attention. But should we really care that much about the draft? While the media gets us all hyped up about it, analysts interested in changes to betting odds and fans curious about their favorite teams’ chances might wonder. How often do these high-rated draft prospects actually go on to have a big first season, or do these players usually need a little bit of development first?
Obviously, you can see from the length of this article that the answer isn’t so straightforward. Some players need a bit of time to adjust to the big leagues, some are stricken with injury early on, but some do perform right out of the box, as it were.
High Draft Pick? High Stress Situation!
One thing we feel we should point out is, being involved in the NFL Draft and especially being a highly-rated draft pick must be a super stressful situation! These young men often have the hopes and dreams of fans, coaches and betting fans riding on them. The pressure they face is intense. The higher up in the draft, the more this is true. We say this to acknowledge that there is an intense psychological side to the equation that is sometimes overlooked.
While we’re sure that every team wants to get as much out of any draft pick as quickly as they can, some positions are more typically expected to deliver right away. Quarterbacks, offensive tackle and edge rusher positions are usually picked up because that team needs that position to work today, not in a season or two. That being said, there are rookies in just about every position that have matched and exceeded expectations for their teams and in betting markets.
Actual Factual Rookie Success Stories
While not every rookie can be the best, obviously, there are plenty that do great. Here are a few from the last few years that lived up to the draft hype.
Ja’Marr Chase
Chase was selected fifth overall and was expected to be an important part of the Cincinnati Bengals’ plan in 2021, and it’s fair to say that he definitely lived up to the hype. Chase set a number of NFL rookie records during his initial season and helped the Bengals reach the Super Bowl. He was named Offensive Rookie of the Year by the Associated Press and also named the Sporting News Rookie of the Year. He finished the regular season with an impressive 1,455 yards and 13 receiving touchdowns, and is emblematic of how a hyped up high-draft pick can immediately pay dividends in the right home and be a good pick for betting fans.
Micah Parsons
Parsons was selected 12th overall, and it’s clear that the Dallas Cowboys in 2021 knew he would perform, but even they might have been surprised at how effective he was out of the gate. Usually, defensive players get less love than the offensive parts of the team, but Parsons proved that defense can be impressive. He was unanimously selected for the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award and got a place on the NFL All-Rookie Team as well. With 84 tackles total and 13 sacks, Parsons showed that defensive rookies can be an important part of a team’s makeup.
Justin Herbert
Herbert was picked sixth overall by the Los Angeles Chargers in 2020 and wasn’t even supposed to start in Week 1. However, fate had other plans, and he did end up in the lineup, which ended well for the Chargers. At the end of his rookie season, Herbert earned the Offensive Rookie of the Year award and had a number of other records under his belt, including becoming the first rookie to throw multiple touchdown passes in seven consecutive games.
Nick Bosa
Bosa was chosen second overall in 2019 by the San Francisco 49ers, who needed a new defensive end, and he did a good job of giving them what they needed. Although they didn’t win, Bosa helped the 49ers get to the Super Bowl. He was named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and recorded 9 sacks and 47 total tackles.
Why Do Some Shine Straight Away?
It’s difficult to give a succinct answer and unweave the magic of what leads some to success, but there are a few factors that we think are influential:
- Good team fit: Sometimes a player just fits well with the rest of the team. Ja’Marr Chase was drafted onto a team with his former college quarterback, Joe Burrow. Having that instant rapport and teamwork built in has to be a factor that helps him succeed.
- Being physically ready: This seems like a no-brainer, but some draft players just go above and beyond being physically and athletically ready for the big-time.
- Willingness to work hard: This seems obvious as well, but some rookies will put in plenty of extra miles when working to fit in with their new team. This willingness to work hard at adapting to their new environment is going to help them make the most of their position, and signs of their work ethic are closely watched for by betting enthusiasts hoping to get an inside scoop on their possible future impact.
- Luck: Let’s not discount sweet lady luck. We don’t necessarily mean the luck to be in that position or the luck on the field to make the right move, but sometimes a player gets lucky and gets the chance to perform on that big stage early. So many rookies get picked up with plans to implement them later, but get the chance to perform early because someone else is injured or sick.
Sometimes the Reality Matches the Hype
So, as it turns out, there is a reasonable reason for all of that hype from analysts, betting enthusiasts and football fans around the draft. A team getting exactly the right sort of player role they need filled can lead them to a strong shot at the Super Bowl, and a player getting picked up by the right team with the right team chemistry can help to elevate them to perform at their best.
So get hyped up at draft time, regardless of whether you are into betting, analyzing the draft possibilities, or simply a football fan. The hype is worth it.
