A Friday night shooting in Sylacauga claimed the life of 17-year-old Dmarcus Riggins, a student and football player at B.B. Comer Memorial High School. The shooting occurred in the Drew Court neighborhood within the Sylacauga city limits.

The school released a statement Saturday asking the community to keep students and athletes in their prayers.

“Tiger Nation, please keep our school, students and athletes in your prayers as they mourn the loss of a classmate,” the statement read. The sanctuary at Sylacauga First Assembly was opened from 4–6 p.m. Saturday for those affected, with coaches, teachers, and pastors on hand.

Another victim was also injured in the shooting, but authorities have not released their name or condition.

Talladega County Coroner Shaddix Murphy said 17-year-old DMarcus Riggins, of Sylacauga, was pronounced dead at 11:36 p.m. at Coosa Valley Medical Center from an apparent gunshot wound. Riggins, a student-athlete at B.B. Comer Memorial High School, played both football and basketball.

Sylacauga Police responded to a shots-fired call at 10:32 p.m. on Crestline Avenue in the Drew Court community. Riggins and an 18-year-old male were both taken to the hospital, where Riggins died. The second victim’s condition has not been released.

Riggins’ body was sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for an autopsy.

Please keep Riggins family and the other victims family in your prayers.
