Pittmans Pocket: Bethune–Cookman vs. FIU: Simmons Faces Familiar Foe

The Friday night opener between Bethune–Cookman and FIU carries extra intrigue with a familiar storyline at the center. Former Florida A&M head coach Willie Simmons makes his debut at FIU, and his first test comes against a SWAC program he knows well.
Bethune–Cookman returns a mix of talent and experience that should make them competitive. Quarterback Timmy McClain provides a dual-threat presence, while veteran passer Cam’Ron Ransom gives the Wildcats stability under center. In the backfield, Marqui Johnson anchors the ground game, and his ability to chew clock will be critical if B-CU hopes to keep the Panthers off balance.
On the other sideline, Simmons inherits an FIU roster with plenty of playmakers. Keyone Jenkins returns at quarterback to lead the offense, with Tar’varish Dawson offering explosive speed at wide receiver. Defensively, edge rusher Kenton Simmons is expected to be a difference-maker, while special teams weapon C’Quan Jnopierre provides game-breaking potential in the return game.
Bethune–Cookman’s experience, combined with their knowledge of Simmons’ coaching tendencies, could allow them to push FIU deep into the game. But over four quarters, the Panthers’ depth, athleticism, and big-play ability should tilt the matchup in their favor.
Prediction: FIU 31, Bethune–Cookman 24
