University of Cincinnati Freshman Jeremiah Kelly Died from Undiagnosed Heart Condition

The University of Cincinnati community continues to grieve following the heartbreaking death of freshman football player Jeremiah Kelly, who passed away in April after being found unresponsive at his off-campus residence. According to a recently released coroner’s report, the 18-year-old died from cardiac hypertrophy — a condition in which the heart muscle thickens and can lead to sudden cardiac arrest.

Kelly, a promising offensive lineman from Avon, Ohio, had just begun his journey with the Bearcats after enrolling early and participating in spring practices. He had passed the NCAA-required pre-participation physical exam, and there were no known prior health concerns, according to both his family and university officials.

“The Cincinnati football program and athletics department continue to mourn Jeremiah’s passing,” a spokesperson for the university said. “He is deeply missed by all of us.”

The Hamilton County coroner’s office declined to comment further on the case.

Before joining the Bearcats, Kelly had helped lead Avon High School to an undefeated 16-0 season and a state championship, earning praise for his strength, work ethic, and leadership on and off the field.

His legacy now stands as a reminder of the hidden risks young athletes may face — and the importance of continued advances in cardiac screening and education in youth sports.
