What made you decide you wanted to be a football player?
I started playing football in elementary school and have loved football ever since. One of my favorite things about football is it is one of the few sports where you can go all in and use all of your strength against your opponent. It is also my favorite sport because of the close camaraderie between teammates at Augustana and especially our offensive linemen.
What are your favorite moments from your football life?
I am from a small town (Treynor, Iowa) so one of my favorite things about high school football was getting to play both defensive line and offensive line. And playing college football at Augustana has been a blast. Some of my most memorable moments have been playing in the NCAA 2nd Round Playoff game in 2023 in Golden, Colorado, being NSIC Conference Champions 3 years, and being chosen for NSIC 1st Team offensive line last year. Traveling with the guys for away games and the funny things that always seem to happen on the road are also some favorite moments. I also love our great offensive line traditions, like getting Chipotle to watch film together each week and playing hacky sack before home games!
Which one of your family members inspires you the most and why?
My grandpa, Mick Guttau, inspires me the most because he is a decorated Vietnam Veteran, who flew Cobra fighter helicopters in the war. He tells us a lot of stories and life lessons from combat, and especially about his buddies he served with and the importance of that brotherhood. My offensive line coach, Brayden Kearsley, emphasizes the importance of that military-type mindset of being there for each other as we are going into football “battles” together, and I can really appreciate the importance of that from the stories my grandpa has told me.
What are you looking forward to in your upcoming season?
I’m really looking forward to spending time with the guys and experiencing the whole season and that we have more home games this year too. I’m definitely excited for some big re-matches. I can’t wait for the first game to get here – and look forward to each week! And since I’m a senior this year, I’m very excited that I will get to be first in line at all team dinners this year!
If you could hang out with any football player past or present for a day, who and why?
My Augustana strength & conditioning coach, Brett Chambers, and I are both from the same small town, Treynor, Iowa, and he played football there with my dad and my uncle and then went on to play at the University of Iowa. And coach Chambers’ dad was also one of my high school coaches. I’d love to go back in time and hang out and play football at Treynor with coach Chambers!
What are your favorite things about playing football for Augustana?
The coaches and my teammates are my favorite thing about playing football for Augustana. How close the whole team is and especially how close we are in our position groups is awesome. And coach Olszewski, coach Kearsley, coach Scholton, coach Chambers, and the whole coaching staff have had huge influences on my life and football career. One of my other favorite things about playing at Augustana is the cold weather in South Dakota!
What should we know about Brock Fox the person?
I am fiercely competitive about everything I do – which sometimes drives my family crazy! I just flat out love to play football. I’ve been told throughout my life that I am hard-working, dedicated, resilient, and tough. I am a small-town farm kid, and did football, wrestling, and track in high school. I love working on the farm and spending time with family. I am getting my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Augustana, with an entrepreneurship minor, and my specialties are welded metal sculptures and ceramics. I’m the only football player art major at Augustana so that’s been a fun and unique experience.
What is your favorite offensive scheme and why?
Probably my favorite is a duo offensive scheme because I love the rush of coming out of the stance and driving straight up the middle as hard as I can. I like the vertical movement and pushing the defense back as far as we can!
How do you handle challenges both in life and on the football field?
In challenges in life and football, I try to think of ways I can work through a problem and create solutions. On the field especially, I want to keep going after something if it’s a challenge until I master it and build confidence in doing it. Then move on to the next challenge.
What would a team get in a player like you?
A team would get a dedicated, strong, hardworking lineman who always gives 100% and never gives up!
What stands out about your film the most?
Usually when watching my film, the coaches comment on my pulling and use of strength in unique ways as well as pass protection plays, getting far up the field, and pancake blocks.
Who is the most underrated player you’ve played with and why?
My teammate last year, C.J. James, because he is amazing and while learning a new offense last year, he switched to playing center as a senior and making more calls for us and is a great leader.
