What Are the Saints Doing?

Since Drew Brees retired, the New Orleans Saints haven’t been the same. Over the last four seasons, they haven’t reached 10 wins once. They aren’t improving, but they aren’t fully bottoming out either. After finishing 5-12 last year, it’s fair to ask: what direction is this team actually heading in?

Instead of committing to a full rebuild or making aggressive moves to contend, the Saints seem stuck. They’ve signed veterans like Jameis Winston and Derek Carr in recent years, hoping for a spark. But the results haven’t changed. This offseason, they spent a second-round pick on Tyler Shough — a 26-year-old rookie quarterback — but didn’t sign a veteran to mentor him. If Shough is expected to start from Day 1, who’s guiding him in that quarterback room?

It’s not just the quarterback spot that feels off. New Orleans continues to bring back players like tight end Juwan Johnson — a good player, but part of a core that hasn’t produced results. Chris Olave is their top receiver, but injuries have limited his consistency. Instead of adding real help on offense, the Saints are running it back with the same group that finished 5-12.

And that’s the problem. What’s the plan? Is this a win-now team? A quiet rebuild? Or something in between?

To be fair, the Saints still have some strong pieces, especially on defense. But the current roster doesn’t scream contender — and there’s no clear rebuild strategy either. If this season goes the same way as the last, the front office will have some serious questions to answer.

Right now, it just feels like the Saints are doing a lot… without really going anywhere.
