Viral Video: Former NFL star Apologizes to family of woman he killed in DUI crash

Former Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Henry Ruggs issued a heartfelt apology Monday night during a special event called Hope for Prisoners event in Las Vegas. Ruggs was furloughed to speak at the event. Speaking publicly for the first time since his conviction, Ruggs addressed the family of Tina Tintor—the woman he killed in a high-speed, alcohol-related car crash in 2021.

On November 2, 2021, Ruggs was driving his sports car at speeds reaching 156 mph when he crashed into Tintor’s vehicle in a residential area where the speed limit was just 45 mph. The impact caused Tintor’s car to burst into flames, killing the 23-year-old and her dog. Ruggs’ blood alcohol level was recorded at 0.16%—twice Nevada’s legal limit. The Raiders released him the day after the crash.

At Monday’s event, Ruggs was asked what he would say to Tintor’s family. In a video captured by Vincent Bonsignore on Twitter.

“One, I wish I could turn back the hands of time. I would love for them to meet the real Henry Ruggs and not the one that was escaping from something. I sincerely apologize for not only being a part of that situation, but for the fact that my face is always in the news, always in the newspaper. They have to constantly be reminded of the situation—reminded of me.”

Ruggs pleaded guilty in May 2023 to felony DUI resulting in death and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. In August 2023, he was sentenced to three to ten years in prison. He will be eligible for parole in August 2026. His former teammate, Josh Jacobs, has stated that Ruggs hopes to make an NFL comeback if given the opportunity.

As someone who works in a Federal Prison daily, this is a huge first step for Ruggs. It is very difficult to admit your faults and ask for forgiveness. The former Alabama star is on the right path.

Ruggs’ appearance Monday marks a rare moment of public reflection as he begins the long road toward accountability and rehabilitation.
