Penn State made it to the semi-final of the inaugural 12 team College Football Playoff last season due to its rushing attack being one of the reasons why. Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen have form a dynamic running back duo that helps Penn State become of the top offenses in college football. I take a deeper dive into what makes Kaytron Allen one of the top running backs in college football.
Kaytron Allen is one of the more physical runners in college football. He fights for yards every play, trying to run over defenders. He is a strong runner who loves to run people over, but showcases solid balance after first contact. He can get to the second level quickly, typically showing a quick burst on some of the wide zone runs that Penn State loves to run. He displays solid vision and feel for the game, finding cutback lanes and jump cuts to get himself open against defenders. Allen showcases good patience when he waits for running lanes to open up. His physicality makes him an effective goal line and short yard option for offenses.
While there’s a lot to like about Allen’s game, there are areas that need improvement. He lacks consistent long-speed, often getting caught from behind on longer runs. Although he does a good job identifying blitzers in pass protection, his technique needs refinement—he frequently drops his head, which leads to balance issues against defenders. In the open field, he leans heavily on his physicality and power to break tackles, but could benefit from adding more creativity and elusiveness to his game.
Overall, I view Kaytron Allen as one of the top running back prospects in the 2026 draft class. While the 2025 class was historically strong due to its depth, the 2026 group also has the potential to produce several quality backs—and Allen is certainly among them. Another 1,000-yard season and a deep playoff run would significantly boost his draft stock, giving scouts a closer look at his physical running style and toughness.
