The Byron Nelson High School community in Texas is mourning the sudden and unexpected loss of head football coach Travis Pride, whose death was announced Wednesday evening by the school.

In a heartfelt letter to students, staff, and families, Principal Kara Lea Deardorff remembered Coach Pride as more than just a football coach — describing him as a transformational figure on campus.

“For nearly a decade, Coach Pride has made a positive difference in the lives of hundreds, if not thousands, of students on our campus,” Deardorff wrote. “While he led the football program, Coach Pride’s impact extended well beyond athletics or the students he coached. Coach Pride was a successful football coach, but I will remember him more for the engaging and supportive culture he cultivated on our campus.”

Coach Pride led the Bobcats to a 9–2 record during the 2024–25 season in Class 6A Region I District 4. Their impressive run ended in the playoffs with a hard-fought loss to eventual state champions North Crowley.

Byron Nelson High School has made grief counselors available to help students process the loss. Counseling staff will be present in the school’s front office from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday.

At this time, the cause of Coach Pride’s death has not been made public.

Coach Travis Pride leaves behind a legacy of leadership, compassion, and community spirit that will be remembered far beyond the football field.
