Maryland High School Football Player Killed in Accidental Shooting, Police Say

A 16-year-old high school football player from Beltsville, Maryland, was fatally shot inside his home over the weekend in what police are describing as a tragic and avoidable incident involving a firearm.
Derrick Palmer, a student-athlete at John F. Kennedy High School in Wheaton, was killed Saturday afternoon at his residence on Heartwood Drive, according to a statement from the Prince George’s County Police Department.
Investigators say Palmer was with two other individuals, including 18-year-old Kimaury Kamara of Mt. Holly Springs, Pennsylvania, when the shooting occurred in an upstairs bedroom. According to charging documents, Kamara admitted to detectives that he was handling a firearm and believed it was unloaded when he pointed it at Palmer and pulled the trigger. The gun discharged, striking Palmer in the head and fatally wounding him.
Kamara has been arrested and charged with manslaughter, possession of a “ghost gun,” and other related offenses. Authorities confirmed that he is being held without bond ahead of a hearing scheduled for June.
Police recovered three firearms from the scene — two Glock pistols and a third weapon identified as a ghost gun, which had a 30-round magazine and a machine gun conversion switch. Ghost guns are privately made firearms that lack serial numbers, making them difficult to trace.
The community is mourning the loss of Palmer, who was known for his dedication to football and his vibrant presence among teammates and classmates. Officials from John F. Kennedy High School expressed condolences to Palmer’s family and said counseling resources would be made available to students and staff.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to piece together the events leading up to the deadly shooting.
