2016 NFL DRAFT SCOUTING NOTES: Vernon Hargreaves III, CB, Florida

By Lijah Spencer (@tweaked74)
Tonight we look at quite possibly one of the best players in college football. As always these notes are based off from previous year’s film, and will precede the full scouting report which I will write after viewing multiple games from the upcoming season. Here are my notes:

Vernon Hargreaves III, CB, 5’11, 192 Lbs. Florida, (Junior)

The Positives

1) Very good footwork

2) Very good speed

3) Great ability to change direction

4) Good use of hands jamming the receiver in press coverage

The Negatives

1) Average NFL size

2) Not great at catching the ball

Vernon Hargreaves III may be the best young corner in college football. Only a junior this season, he finds himself on the top of most draft lists for the cornerback position. He has average size standing at 5’11 and weighing 192 Lbs, but his technique more than makes up for his lack of stellar size. He has great speed, both straight line speed to keep up with WR’s and recovery speed to catch back up to a receiver. He has a fluid backpedal and very good footwork. He also has good hip flexibility allowing him to fluidly turn and accelerate with a WR. Hargreaves is a good tackler, and he uses his hands very well when jamming receivers while playing press coverage, though he will have to be careful with how handsy he gets while downfield with a WR. Watching the film it appears that most teams try not to throw to his side. His biggest fault at this point is that he isn’t great at catching the ball so I wouldn’t expect a high number of interceptions. At this point I would expect Hargreaves to be a top 10 pick as “shut down corners” are hard to find, though that could all change depending on how this season goes.
