2016 NFL Draft Scouting Notes: Trevone Boykin, QB, TCU

By Lijah Spencer (@tweaked74)

Over the course of the next few weeks I will be giving you my scouting notes for some of the top rated prospects for next year’s NFL draft. These notes are based off from last year’s film, and will precede the full scouting report which will come after I watch film from the upcoming season. Tonight’s notes concludes the QB group (for now at least), and are on Trevone Boykin, here are my notes:

Trevone Boykin. QB 6’2 205 lbs T.C.U

The Positives

1) A very athletic QB

2) Good running ability

3) Ability to throw on the run

4) Good “escape ability” in the pocket

5) Strong Arm

6) When sets feet and squares his, very good deep ball accuracy

The Negatives

1) Fundamentals are inconsistent (throws off back foot, does not always set feet)

2) Accuracy inconsistent due to his fundamentals

3) At 205 lbs, some NFL teams may be concerned about durability issues considering his playing style

Boykin threw for almost 4000 yards, 33 TD’s, and 10 INT’s last season and ran for an additional 700 yards and 8 TD’s. He is a very athletic, mobile QB who can make plays with both his arm and his legs, though his style of play may cause injury concerns at the NFL level. His Accuracy is decent, but can improve if he improves his technique and fundamentals.

In closing, after viewing not just the the five QB’s that I have featured in these notes, but countless others in this class as well, my top two QB’s at this very early point are Jared Goff out of California, and Gunner Kiel out of Cincinnati.
