2016 NFL Draft Scouting Notes: Carson Wentz, QB, North Dakota State

By Lijah Spencer (@tweaked74)
Tonight we take a look at another Quarterback who could be in play to be a first round pick in next April’s Draft. Here are my notes:

Carson Wentz. QB. 6’6. 231 lbs. Senior. North Dakota State.

The Positives

1) Great NFL size

2) Has a strong arm and can make all the “NFL” throws

3) An athletic QB for his size with the ability to gain yards with his legs

4) Runs a “pro-style” offense

The Negatives

1) Inconsistent fundamentals.

2) Accuracy is also inconsistent

3) Looks to run too quickly if his first read isn’t open.

4) Level of competition.

There is a lot to like in Wentz’s game. He has prototypical NFL size, a strong arm, and is an athletic player for his size. Wentz shows good scrambling ability, and enough athleticism to hurdle would be tacklers as he gains big chunks of yards. He also shows the ability to throw on the run, as well as throw from many different angles. However, there are also things that need to be cleaned up. His fundamentals are very inconsistent, when they are good he has everything you want. A crisp clean drop back, a good bounce in his feet, and when he finds his target, he sets his feet, squares his hips, and steps into his throws, and usually makes an accurate throw. However, when he is pressured he very often loses those good fundamentals and throws off his back foot, thus leading to an inaccurate pass. The level of competition he faces is not very good, there for a solid season in which he improves upon his fundamentals is going to important for him. A solid season and a good showing at the senior bowl and Wentz could well put himself in the position to be a high draft pick.
