The Ups and Downs of Spencer Rattler

Will South Carolina help Spencer Rattler this year? Can they help spring him back to the top quarterback in the NCAA?

He was once considered a shoo-in to become the number one NFL draft pick. As an influential quarterback, Spencer Rattler was returning some big college numbers and a step up to the professional game seemed guaranteed.

Fast forward a few months and matters are less certain. Many expect that he can still have a future in the National Football League but, when the draft comes along, Rattler may now be some way down the pecking order.

It’s been a frustrating time for the youngster but will a change of college lead to a change in fortunes?

Making the Switch

In December 2021 it was announced that Spencer Rattler, along with his tight end teammate Austin Stogner, would be making a switch from Oklahoma to the South Carolina Gamecocks. 2022 therefore offers the players a fresh start and a final chance to impress the pro teams ahead of the NFL draft.

In the case of Rattler, the move came as no surprise after a string of shaky performances saw him benched behind backup quarterback Caleb Williams. Inconsistent displays have defined his college career to date and a change of scene with the University of South Carolina Athletics – Official Athletics Website (https://gamecocksonline.com/) has to be a catalyst for improvement.

Spencer Rattler will certainly be put under pressure in his new environment. South Carolina are not exactly turning in any stunning performances in their division and this won’t be the easy ride that might have got elsewhere.

Roller Coaster Ride

Spencer Rattler first appeared for the Oklahoma Sooners in June 2019 as a raw 18-year-old. He was restricted to just three appearances in that season but it was enough to lay a platform for the following campaign.

2020 was the year that scouts in the pro game started to sit up and take notice. At the start of his redshirt freshman season, Rattler faced up to a battle with Tanner Mordecai for the starting quarterback jersey. In September, it was announced that Rattler had won that particular battle and he made his starting debut on the 12th of that month against Missouri State.

Impressive numbers followed as he consolidated his position in that starting pack but the peak period wasn’t to last. A hip injury in November derailed his progress and, in the following season, that benching in favor of Caleb Williams was to follow.

Rattler has yet to get back to his best following that setback. Injury is part and parcel of any sport and the response of the individual athlete can be key to a favorable result in the following draft.

Perhaps Spencer Rattler could take some inspiration from the man he replaced at the Oklahoma Sooners. Tanner Mordecai has since transferred to Southern Methodist University where, on debut, he broke the school record for passing touchdowns.

A bright future in the https://www.nfl.com/ can still be achieved and many pro teams will be following Spencer Rattler’s progress at the Gamecocks.
